Whether it’s FOMO or YOLO that’s making you give into online sales and deals, most of us are guilty of going a little overboard when it comes to online shopping. The addiction to retail therapy is very real. In fact, a 2013 survey of 1,000 adults by a website found that one in three people shop to deal with stress. If you’re trying to resist online sales and deals, here are some questions you need to ask yourself before you log in.

Is it really a good deal?
50 per cent off! 70 per cent off!

Ah, the temptation of a good deal can make even the strongest willed weak at the knees. But you need to understand that while it may look like a good deal, sites sometimes mark up their prices before the sale so that they can make these great, unbelievable slashes to encourage you to think you’re actually getting a superb offer. You need to learn how to focus only on the offered price and ignore the base price and of course, the most important question is…

Do I even need it?
Tempting online sale? Combat the urge to splurge
We work hard for money. So, while you should live a little and enjoy life, you shouldn’t use your hard earned cash just to play into the hands of retailers. You need to ask yourself whether you are buying it because you think you need a prize for working hard or whether you actually need it at all. Many of our purchases are frivolous and unnecessary, but if you see something you’re tempted to buy, keep it in your cart for a few days to figure out if it was actually practical. And here’s a trick, the price may even come down.

Should I sign up?’
Tempting online sale? Combat the urge to splurge
Probably not. After you purchase something from a particular website, you’re bombarded with emails showing off their latest collections, deals, and offers. While it may be tempting to click on ‘display images’ if you’re trying to break the online shopping spell, click on ‘unsubscribe.’ Marking them as spam or trash often won’t stop them coming. But if you unsubscribe from the mail altogether, you save yourself the slippery slide down the shopping black hole.

Should I download the app?
Tempting online sale? Combat the urge to splurge
You would never shop so much and so freely in the real world so you have to look at the root of your problem here — the internet. You have so much access to brands via phones or computers, which makes the temptation even stronger. If you’re trying to resist online sales, block the sites on your computer and delete the apps from your phone. You know what they say, out of sight, out of mind. Also, even if you’re strong, temptation literally sneaks up on us thanks to retargeting advertisements. To avoid this, clear your cache.

Let’s block ads! (Why?)
